Chat participants had the opportunity to find out more and ask questions about choosing law as a career, how to prepare and apply to law school, what it’s like to be a law student, and career options. Information about the Chat was mailed to high school counselors in Topeka, KS, and the surrounding communities. We also mailed information to all community colleges within the state of Kansas. We utilized the Candidate Referral Service and sent an email out to all minorities that are in his/her first or second year of undergraduate work. We had approximately 61 individuals log into our Chat and ask questions of our students, faculty, and administration. The Chat remained active for the entire two-hour time frame.
Wayne State University Law School
Wayne Law Day with CMA
02.01.10
Thirty students from Communication & Media Arts (CMA) High School visited Wayne Law for a day. They began the day with a tour and brief talk by law librarians about legal research and writing. They then came to the law school auditorium where myself and Ricardo Villarosa talked with them about pursuing a career in law (educational requirements, skills, LSAT prep, character & fitness). We asked current law students to join us for a panel discussion/ Q & A session with the students. We were fortunate to have four current law students meet with the students and talk a bit about their backgrounds, interests and career goals. After the panel discussion, we walked them through a mock trial (based on the Winona Ryder incident). Students served on a three panel judge (slight variation from jury trial so that more students could be involved). Students also served as witnesses, the prosecution and defense, bailiff and jurors. After the mock trial we had a debriefing session to talk about some of the challenges the students faced building and articulating their case and the skills that they put to use.
Diversity Day
02.17.10
During Diversity Day, we targeted community college and early college attendees. The event featured a welcome address by the dean of the law school. Attendees then heard from two distinguished alumni of color (Judge Edward Ewell, Wayne County Third Circuit Court and Jason Weber, In-house counsel, Compuware). Judge Ewell and Mr. Weber spoke a bit about their backgrounds prior to coming to law school, the challenges of not conforming to the crowd and succumbing to the fate many of their peers did. They answered questions from attendees about law school preparation, highlights of their career and their experience at Wayne. Attendees then sat through a mock family law class, taught by Professor Adele Morrison. Professor Morrison had her students attend the session and both students and attendees participated in the “mock” class. After the class, there was a law student panel, which allowed attendees to learn about the admissions process, the first year law experience and they also fielded several questions.
Law and (Dis)Order
02.27.10
This event was held on Saturday, February 27th at the Detroit Public Library (Redford Branch). The Coleman A. Young Foundation’s Real Skills Program is a program targeted at high school students from 8th-12th grade. The program helps prepare students for college and/or vocational school. The group meets on Saturdays for a series of sessions with a variety of topics for discussion. “Law and (Dis)Order” was the session surrounding civic engagement. During this event, we contacted BLSA alums and current BLSA students to help facilitate a mock trial. Using street law materials, we created a mock trial scenario based on the Chris Brown/Rihanna domestic violence case. The alums and students first spoke about their backgrounds, skills needed to succeed in college and law school and their career aspirations. After the panel, we spoke briefly about Discover Law and we launched into the mock trial. Students played the role of judge, jury, bailiff, witnesses and prosecution and defense.
